These 28 Sweet Dishes From 28 States Prove Why We Indians Are So Obsessed With Desserts!



1. Chattisgarh - Dehrori & Lasta

2. Arunachal Pradesh - Khapse


Khapse, a Tibetan biscuit, is prepared during this time. It is made from adough of flour, sugar and butter which is then shaped into different forms and sizes and deep fried. 10. Maharashtra - Puran Poli

11. Mizoram - Koat Pitha


With banana and rice being its main ingredients, this dish is made by mixing the two with jaggery, and is deep fried in oil. It surely is one interesting food item to taste.The Mizo Tea is a must have. Two types of tea brew are premade and stored in flasks. One is a light brew and the other is strong. They offer (by default, but it’s not complimentary) premade, cold bhathure or some sweets made of maida with the tea.

Shufta is made using dry fruits, sugar, and saffron, with an added touch of cinnamon and pepper. The phirni is very a famous sweet dish of Jammu and Kashmir.

14. Rajasthan - Ghewar

15. Sikkim - Sael Roti


The north eastern states also have an exceptional variety of sweet dishes. In Sikkim - seal roti is very famous. It is eaten with spicy potato and is mainly prepared during the festivals.


16. Tamil Nadu - Pal Poli & Tirunelveli Halwa


Pal Poli is a dish of maida rotis that are first deep fried, and then immersed in milk warmed with condensed milk and saffron. Adhirasam is like the Indian doughnut. It is made from rice flour, pepper, jaggery and butter. The sweet dish is popular as an offering to the gods during puja prayers, both at home and in temples in Tamil Nadu. 


17. Uttar Pardesh - Petha & Peda


Mathura is the spiritual place because it is the birth place of 'lord shri krishna.' The very famous sweet peda is a must have. Never forget to buy famous sweets of Agra which is Agra ka Petha.


18. Uttarakhand - Bal mithai 


Native to Uttarakhand, Bal Mithai is cooked khoya covered in sugar balls. That is a whole lot of sweet, and you really have to be willing enough to take in so much of it! The bal mithai of Ranikhet is very famous and tasty.


19. West Bengal - Mishti Doi & Rasgulla


The local foods of Kolkata are delicious and the rosogolla, which are very famous and amazing too. Bengali sweets from K.C. Das are a must-have, specially the sondesh.


20. Andhra Pradesh & Telanagana - Qubani-Ka-Meetha 


In dessert, try khubani ka meetha and double ka meetha (shahi tukda). A special Hyderabadi sweet 'khubani ka meetha' is must try when in Hyderabad.


21. Bihar - Thekua 


Thekua or Khajuria is a snack made from wheat flour, jaggery (or sugar) mixed together, moulded and deep fried. It is an absolute treat to the taste buds. The litti chokha aroma. 22. Haryana - Aloo Halwa


Aloo Ka Halwa is made of mashed potatoes and pure ghee which adds to its wonderful flavour and aroma. Local food is a blend of Haryanvi and Rajasthani. Nothing particular to shop but it's interesting to get a glimpse of markets like there used to be in a bygone era, especially in the evening.


23. Himachal Pradesh - Dabbroo 


Dabbroos are sweet wheat pancakes made using wheat, ghee, and milk. Places to be visited are the Rohtang pass, Kalka valley, Chindi, Karsog Valley, Barot and many places. Food was simple and easy to cook with generous amount of 'Ghee' added to it, to make it taste better.


24. Manipur - Madhurjan Thongba 


Madhurjan thongba are sweet besan dumplings soaked in milk. The place is a boon for pure vegetarians (like me). There is no visible night life in Manipur and Nagaland due to security protocols being followed by Indian Army. Although if your are non-vegetarian then the entire Manipur trip can be memorably delectable for you. 25. Meghalaya - Pukhlein 


Also known as a sweet bread in Meghalaya, Pukhlein is made of jaggery, rice, and is deep fried in oil. Pukhlein made of jaggery & rice is the staple dish of Meghalaya. The dishes are lip-smacking. The food culture is amazing.


26. Nagaland - Nap Naang


I would say that the food here is exceptional in its own way. Nagaland is known for the black rice pudding known as nap naang.


27. Odisha - Chenna Poda


Chhena poda is a cheese dessert from the state of Odisha in eastern India. It literally means burnt cheese in Oriya. Bhubaneswar is the state capital. Its a planned city. 28. Tripura - Awan Bangwi 


This is definitely one of the most unique dishes that hail from India. Made of sticky rice, Awan Bangwi is made only in Tripura. It is made by mixing rice, cashews sautéed in ghee, raisins, and this mixture is put in cones made of banana leaves and is steamed. Definitely something worth trying!
